Incredible views, the Great Ridge, prehistoric hill-forts, the shivering mountain, a spectacular limestone valley and a Norman cliff-top castle.
Terrain from Castleton, field paths lead steadily up towards Lose Hill with a final steep climb onto the summit (Losehill Pike). A clear path then heads along the top of the undulating ridge (flagged in places) up to the summit of Mam Tor (exposed to the elements). A path leads steeply down from the summit, then field paths and farm tracks head southwards before a path heads down through Cave Dale (steep, rocky path in places) back into Castleton.
Caution:
This walk involves a number of steep ascents and descents climbing to and from the Great Ridge. Keep well away from the edge of Back Tor (sheer cliffs), and keep to the path across the top of Mam Tor (517 metres above sea level and with sheer cliffs on its south-eastern edge). The path down through Cave Dale is rough underfoot and muddy in places.
Terain:
some steep accents / descents
