We recievedd the following update from the Cockermoth Youth Hostel Manager.

Hello Mick
This reply is coming directly from myself, Ray, the actual site manager of Cockermouth Youth Hostel.
So far you have dealt with Lucy at Keswick YHA, which is the way to book beds, pay etc. All queries to do wth payment or changes in numbers must go there.
Lucy has forwarded your message to me as I am better placed to answer your query about how the hostel is, and the shops.
So hello, and thank you for your support in having made a booking at cockermouth. Both ourselves and the town will be very greatful. The town is determined to make a strong come back fro our recent troubles.
The hostel was flooded to about 3 1/2', but down stairs is mostly toliets, washrooms, showers and other utilities. Although the hostel is currently out of action, we expect it to be up and running by Jan, so all will be fine by the time of your visit- maybe even better than it was before. The only think that may not be as good as I would like is the grounds, that were idylic, with lawn down to the river, and are now rather strewn with debris.
As for the town, I cannot say with any certainty what the situation will be. At the moment, about the only shops open are the Sainsbury's and Co-Op.. They were totaly un-affected. The diversity of small shops / cafes and pubs (there are few national chains other than The ones mentioned, plus a Boots, and certainly no McDonalds or Starbucks!) has always been a major part of the charm of this place. Although badly affected, recovery work is in full swing, and 3 months is a long time.
I hope this has helped. Please feel free to contact me directly if I can help with anything else..

As you can see the hostel has been affected but due to the layout of the hostel there has not damage to the Sleeping area. We will be recieving regular updates from Ray as to the conditions etc so please keep checking the site regularly
Many thanks
Mick
